Two zimmers!!

We moved on Friday (30 March) to our new home out in Waldstadt Zentrum. We now have two rooms. Whoopee!!  Check it out. :)

Here is what we moved out of our one room apartment. Our landlord, Rudi, picked us up on Friday afternoon, and carted our stuff over to our new home, which is about 15" north of town. Good bye, one zimmer. It has been an interesting experience living in 350 sq. feet. I hope not to repeat this any time soon....But, I'm proud to tell you that Art and I did better than either of us expected. These close quarters have brought us closer together.

Our new kitchen, which now accommodates the two of us. What an improvement!

Our new living room.

Oh my, a second zimmer! Our new bedroom. More later on the bedding and sheets,

Looking from the bedroom into the hall way. The first door leads to the outside. Note small room on the left with the little wicker 3-tier table...the German approximation of a closet. Art is peering out from the bathroom.

Here is why I love being married to an engineer. The freezer had not been defrosted in ages, so within an hour of moving in, Art had the hairdryer going so the freezer would work again.

Our rental agent had a great sense of humor. He called our apartment a sports complex.  Translation: we do not have an elevator. So, here I am on the stairs, about 2/3 of the way up to our apartment, which is on the top floor. Who needs the Wellness Center; just climb these babies 3 or 4 times a day.

We went to the local bakerei for bread, then to the local market for wine and cheese. Here we are having lunch in the woods outside our apartment.

This is the view from our living room window. There are many large apartment complexes in this area, but apparently beyond them is the forest that belongs to the castle in Karlsruhe and you can walk all the way into town (if you know the way).

Looking back towards our apartment, from intersection of the pathways in the previous picture. We have the four  windows on the top level, beginning to the left of the pink stucco.

This is our tram stop. It takes about 10" to get to our previous tram stop; it's about 30" total to get to my office.  The tram runs every 10" during the week day peak hours; every 20" otherwise.
Here is how we get to the laundry room, in the basement.  It is a little creepy, especially given that the lights in the hall way turn out after two minutes.

The laundry room, which contains one washer and one dryer. We were worried about trying to figure out how to select the correct washer temperature. No worries; this washer has only one temperature: cold. And, after wrestling with the dryer setting, we figured out it too has only one temperature: warm. So, I guess it could be worse: the washer could be warm and the dryer cold. :) Next obstacle: we have to get washer tokens from the housekeeper. We do not know who she/he is, nor how to contact him/her, nor how much they cost. Oh well, it's all part of the adventure. (Who knew that one's dreams would include Maytags!)

So, after a long day of moving in, we decide to celebrate at our favorite local Irish pub, the Bray Head. Jim Hamlin and George Hayhoe: this picture is for you because you are members of the original Egg Cup Society. Here is a toast to you! Note the water chaser... you add the water to your whiskey using the little bulb to regulate how much water your need to dilute your whiskey. Can't wait until we get together again at the Shamrock...Dargan, watch out. (BTW, the first sip should be undiluted, the next few need at least several squirts of water!)

  1. My grandfather always said that you shouldn't ever dilute whiskey with water. Have you ever seen what water does to pipes? LOL.

    1. I have, George, but apparently adding a dropper full of water to whiskey here in the Irish pub is the norm. So, when in Rome, or rather an Irish pub in Karlsruhe, I am following the local traditions.

BTW, it was so great to Skype with you today. I look forward to doing it again soon, and to getting the Order of the Eggcup members together for a whiskey as soon as we get back to the US! Cheers....
